Write in Word

Select text and use quick actions

  • Word for Windows
  • Requires sign-in

Select a passage in Word and Textmolt picks it up. Run a one-click action on it, or tell Textmolt what you want in your own words.

  1. With the Textmolt sidebar open, select some text in your document.

  2. A selection tag appears above the input box with the start of the text you selected. That’s the text Textmolt will work on.

  3. For a few seconds, a row of quick actions also appears just above the input box.

When you send a request about a selection, Textmolt sends the selected text together with the paragraphs around it, so the AI understands the context.

Click one of the quick actions while they’re showing:

Quick action What it does
Polish Rewrites the text with smoother, clearer wording.
Translate to English Translates the selection into English.
Expand Expands the text, keeping its original tone.
Summarize Sums up the key points.
Explain Explains what the selected text means.

The reply appears in the conversation. To put it into your document, see Write results back into your document.

Type / in the input box to open the command list, then choose a command or keep typing its name. These commands work on your current selection:

Command Same as
/polish — Polish Selection Polish
/translate — Translate selection to English Translate to English
/expand — Expand Selection Expand
/summarize — Summarize Selection Summarize
/ask — Explain selection Explain

With text selected, type an instruction in the input box (Tell Textmolt what to do…) and press Enter. For example:

  • “Make this more formal.”
  • “Shorten this to two sentences.”
  • “Translate this into Chinese.”

Your message shows Based on with the document selection it used. You can also chat without selecting anything — Textmolt then answers without reading your document.

The selection tag does more than show what you selected:

  • Click the tag to jump back to that text in your document.
  • Double-click it to collect passages: each new selection is added to the same tag, which shows how many selections it holds. Double-click again to go back to one selection at a time.
  • Triple-click it to keep each selection as its own tag (up to 8). Remove a single one with its ×, or all of them with Clear all.
  • Click × on a tag to stop sending that text with your next message.

“Please select some text in the document first”

Section titled ““Please select some text in the document first””

Quick actions and their slash commands need a selection. Select the text in your document first, then run the action again.

They only appear for a new selection, and only for a few seconds. Select a different passage, or use the slash commands instead.

“Not connected to host document, cannot read selection”

Section titled ““Not connected to host document, cannot read selection””

The sidebar has lost its connection to Word. Close the sidebar, then open it again from Textmolt → Open Sidebar.

Click × on the tag to remove it, then select the text you want again.
